Why Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a therapeutic practice that combines the creative process of making art with traditional psychotherapy. It allows individuals to express themselves through various artistic mediums, such as painting, drawing, sculpting, or collage, often in a supportive environment guided by a licensed art therapist. The primary goal of art therapy is to facilitate self-exploration and personal insight, enabling individuals to communicate feelings and thoughts that might be difficult to put into words.

Through the act of creating art, participants can tap into their emotions, reduce anxiety, and gain a better understanding of their experiences. Art therapy can be beneficial for people of all ages and backgrounds, addressing a wide range of issues, including trauma, depression, anxiety, and chronic illness. It encourages mindfulness and self-reflection, serving as a powerful tool for healing and personal growth.

Whether it's through the vibrant strokes of a paintbrush or the careful arrangement of materials, art therapy provides an outlet for expression that can lead to deeper emotional connection and understanding. The process itself is often more important than the final product, focusing on the journey of self-discovery rather than artistic skill. This makes art therapy accessible to everyone, regardless of their artistic experience. By fostering creativity and self-expression, art therapy offers a unique and enriching approach to emotional and psychological well-being.

About Me

My name is Ruchita Parekh, and I moved to New Zealand from India 13 years ago. As an immigrant with dyslexia, I’ve experienced firsthand the challenges of adapting to a new culture while navigating a learning disability.

These experiences have fuelled my commitment to advocating for people with disabilities and immigrants, encouraging them to feel accepted, valued, and empowered as citizens of New Zealand.

I wear many hats and navigate life in pictures, embracing roles that span both tutoring and learning. Currently, I am pursuing a Master’s in Clinical Arts Therapy—a field that allows me to combine my passion for art and mental health.

As both a tutor and a student, I find myself in a unique position, one that lets me connect with students and understand the nuances within the education system. Art therapy, with its ability to bypass language barriers and foster emotional connections, has proven to be a vital tool for individuals who struggle to express themselves. Through my work,

I hope to bridge gaps, encourage expression, and contribute to a society that celebrates diverse voices and supports healing and self-acceptance.
